PILATES – RESTORE YOUR BODY’S NATURAL BALANCE
Pilates was developed by the late Joseph Pilates (1880-1967). The Pilates method is a mind-body conditioning programme initially designed for rehabilitation purposes during the early twentieth century. The Pilates technique is taught in two categories, mat work and machine based work.
The exercises consist of strengthening, mobility and stretching to correct weakness, imbalances and malalignment of the body. By re-educating the body Pilates helps prevent recurrence of conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, as well as aiding in the recovery and recurrence of upper and lower limb injuries such as shoulder, hip and knee pain to name a few.
W.D.C. Physiotherapy follows the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (APPI) method which is designed by physiotherapists specifically for use in the rehabilitation setting. With the APPI method traditional Pilates exercises are broken down and modified to suit the clinical setting.
More recently Pilates has been adopted by top athletes such as The New Zealand All Blacks Rugby Team, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Tiger Woods to name a few. Ballet dancers, fitness enthusiasts and the health rehabilitation sector are also employing the skills of Pilates instructors. Pilates is suitable for all ages and levels of ability.
