5 Great Things To Do In The South East If You Didn’t Have Back Pain

The South East of England is home to many picturesque places and fun things to do. From historic castles, the longest pleasure pier in the world, home to our capital city and award-winning beaches.

We really do have it all.

But if you’ve got back pain – then it becomes tough (and almost impossible) to enjoy all the South East has to offer.

Just the other week we had 4 people ring the clinic telling us their back pain has ‘flared up’ AGAIN!

And it’s not uncommon that we hear that these flare-ups mean activities and family days out, that have been planned for a while, have to be rain checked and put aside for another day…

…until their back pain goes away.

Which is very unlikely it will go away on it’s own, and even if it does, it usually means it’ll flare up again.

Anyway, here’s 5 great places to see in the South East (that a lot of clients have told us they can’t, because their back is so bad, they’re scared it’ll put them out).

1. Southend Pleasure Pier

Home to the longest pleasure pier in the world is my home town of Southend-On-Sea. If you are ready for the challenge and feeling fit and active I recommend you walk along the pier, to the end and back is 1.34 miles long. If you fancy a more relaxed way to enjoy the sights of the coastline then take the pier train. Jimmy and Jamie’s restaurant is a great place to stop for a drink or a bite to eat or there is a café right at the end of the pier in the Pier Pavilion.

2. White Cliffs of Dover

If you’re looking for some breath-taking and inspiring views, look no further!

The White Cliffs of Dover, overlook the English Channel towards the French coast and is noted for its chalky white face. The best way to enjoy this iconic landmark is to take a walk along the coastal path to the South Foreland Lighthouse where you can climb right to the top and enjoy those truly stunning views – one not to be missed.

3. The South Downs

This place offers 618-square-miles of some of the most stunning places to wander and get lost in.

It would be tough to mention all the best areas to visit. The downs stretch from the ancient cathedral city of Winchester to Beachy Head in Eastbourne. Whether it’s a stroll to burn off lunch or a good power walk with the dog, the South Downs really has lots to offer.

If you have the kids with you could spend a day in the western woods or going on a treasure hunt now known as Geocaching. It’s a great fun way to get the kids away from the tv and in to the fresh air.

4. London

Well what can I say about London. So many historical buildings and museums to see from Buckingham Palace to Tower Bridge, to The Natural History Museum, to name a few.

You can take a trip along the Thames on a river boat cruise taking in all the sights of London and maybe even enjoy a cheeky afternoon cream tea.

To be more active how about a walk around one of the many royal parks or go boating on one of the lakes and take some time out and forget you are right in the centre of our wonderful capital city.

5. Foulness Island

Foulness Island is no ordinary island. It is the largest of the Essex Islands and the fourth largest island off the coast of England.

It lies just off the coast of Southend-On-Sea and is owned by the MOD. It has been used for years for testing of artillery. In the middle of all this live a small community of 160 people.

The long stretches of stark marshland are a far cry from the hustle and bustle of Southend-On-Sea with its pleasure pier and amusements. Not only can you find out about the history of the island at the heritage centre but the wildlife here is amazing too – Join one of the nature break cruises and explore the wildlife on and around the island. The trips are suitable for all ages and you will get to see lots of different birds and even seals.

If you’ve got back pain – a bad back that’s flared up, has come on out of the blue, or if you’ve been suffering for a while that it’s just become a normal part of your daily life – that doesn’t have to be the case.
